Causes of Foam Generation in Flue Gas Desulfurization and the Role of Defoamers
Sep 20, 2024Flue gas desulfurization refers to the process of removing harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂) from flue gas by physical or chemical methods. Sulfur dioxide is one of the main pollutants produced when burning fossil fuels containing sulfur. It is highly corrosive and environmentally harmful, so it is very important to effectively control it.
Main methods of flue gas desulfurization
1. Wet desulfurization: Use liquid absorbent (such as limestone slurry) to react with SO₂ in flue gas to produce harmless substances such as calcium sulfate.
2. Dry desulfurization: Add solid absorbent (such as lime powder) directly to flue gas to react with SO₂.
3. Semi-dry desulfurization: Use spray or other methods to mix liquid absorbent with flue gas.
Causes of foam generation
During the wet desulfurization process, foam may be generated due to factors such as mixing, reaction and stirring of liquid absorbent and flue gas. The generation of foam is usually related to the following factors:
1. Liquid surface tension: The properties of liquid components affect foam formation.
2. Gas flow: High gas flow will enhance bubble generation.
3. Temperature and pressure: Different operating conditions will also affect the stability of the foam.
Reasons for using desulfurization defoamers
In order to control foam generation and maintain the normal operation of the desulfurization system, defoamers are usually used. The functions of defoamers include:
1. Improve treatment efficiency: Controlling foam can improve the fluidity and reaction efficiency of the reactor and ensure the stability of the flue gas desulfurization process.
2. Prevent equipment damage: Excessive foam can cause overflow or damage to equipment. Defoamers can avoid these problems and improve the safety and reliability of equipment.
3. Solve the problem of boiling or carrying: Foam will cause the flow of liquid to be unstable, affecting the entire process.
Flue gas desulfurization is an important environmental protection process, and foam generation is an inevitable phenomenon in its process, so the rational use of desulfurization defoamers is particularly important.
